A Historical Boke of Hours

The Limbourg brothers of Flanders were commissioned by the uncle of the King of France in the early 1400s to create 12 seasonal paintings. These paintings were included in a "A Books of Hours". Aristocrats documented their time and activities in this manner.

Painstakingly decorated with gold leaf, lapis lazuli, crushed flowers and egg white, Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry ( Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry) depicted the canonical offices of the day (such as matins and vespers) and the seasons of the year. Each painting included an astrological calendar and a seasonal scene.
